Electrical problem
1991 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I replaced my battery. I put the positive cable on and then when I connected the Neg. The alternator started to smoke! I did not put the cables on backwards but I did replace the solenoid but it is instaslled correctly. Any ideas. I think the alternator was bad anyway but I have never seen one smoke by putting in a new battery.

Hello –

If you are totally sure you hooked things up correctly, then yes, it can happen. I went through 2 batteries one time……on the 2nd one they couldn’t believe it and thought it was something I was doing. They put a battery tester on the battery and it smoked the tester on the spot. A bad batch of batteries.

So, the battery could have a short or a bad alternator……….or even a defective solenoid.

Is all working okay now?

Hello - Also, it looks like you may have some recalls on your vehicle. The dealer may fix these for free. Please contact the dealer service department, give them the VIN number of your car and have them check on these to see if they apply to you.
