Engine Cooling problem

The fan seems to run all the time untill I put it into 5th gear. I've been told that it needs a fan clutch by two different people, someone else who has worked on automobiles for quite some time said they've never heard of a fan clutch. What do you say? and how much does a new one usually cost? Also how much damage am I looking at if I continue to drive it before repairs?
