Transmission problem
1988 Ford Ranger 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

When the clutch is disengaged the transmission soundds like it is scratching and grinding never messed with a 4x4 trans. My main question is on the trans do I need to remove the bolts by the brace in the middle of the truck and take the bolts from the front and drop the transmission or do I need to remove any of the 4x4 parts? I know what the transmission looks like just the 4x4 aspect of it overwhelms me. I have tried looking for a chilton manuel but am unable too locate one. Any help will be greatly appreciated and my direct email is david.don.george@gmail.com

It sounds like the throw-out bearing is bad. The difference between the 2wd and 4wd is you have a transfer case. You will need to remove both drive shafts. Then the transfer case is mounted to the transmission and cross member. Unbolt it from the transmission and remove it and then you'll have full access to the trans. The transfer case is heavy, so be careful when you do this.

Let me know if you have questions.
