1987 ranger clutch and trans was running fine ,had drove about 5 miles and i come to fast stop,heard a loud pop and my clutch quit working when i tried going i had no clutch felt like clutch was still there but not working,i drove another 5 miles with no clutch by the time i got where going the clutch was gone for good,,and now the clutch pedal is really stiff. please help..ps not sure but i was hearring like a quick little pop inside the cab here and there a couple times ..i thought it was the windshield popping ..maybe not sure if it was from this

Either clutch slave cylinder failed or pressure plate failure. Won't know till it is apart

do i have to drop the tranny to get to the clutch slave cylinder

Yes they put it on trans input shaft
