1987 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My dad has a ford ranger that runs but not good. He says it floods and starts smoking when driven a mile or two. He's had it a shop for about 6 months now and the machanic says he's stumped.

Where is the smoke coming from and what color is it?

The smoke he said was black and it's coming out the exaust pipe in the back from what I understood. Someone though it was the carborator but he doesn't think so... I don't know..
