changed external fuel pump and it will start but only run for a few seconds and die

Check the fuel pump relay.

Diesel. On right kick panel.
2.3L & 2.9L EFI. On right front fender apron above wheelwell.

Fuel Pump Relay (All EFI Engines)
Fuel pump relay is activated by ECA with ignition in on or crank positions. When ignition switch is turned on, relay is activated to supply initial line pressure to system.
