1990 Ford Probe Front Wheel Drive Automatic 167000 miles

My vehicle has shown problems since the time of purchase. The problems include: not catching gears properly, unable to accelerate past 55, acceleration is slow and must be manipulated carefully, when stopping it has a low Idle and after stopping it will hesitate to catch gear which seems to cause a shaking of the vehicle, I took it to get a minor check done to it and was told the transmission fluid was grey, the milage is 167,000 roughly and I have not had the vehicle long only about 4-6 weeks. Just today 1/30/09 I was stopped at a red light and when it turned green I tried to accelerate and it dropped gear and would not move at all. It will not go into any drive gear, however it will go into reverse. Since I've owned the vehicle I have had issues with reverse as well. It will not accelerate properly and does not actually gain speed. It is much more like a neutral that rolls backwards.

Hi there,

you will need to get the transmission tested by a trans specialist as they will do a number of test on the trans to determine if it is a pump pressure problem, electrical or mechanical problem, there is no way of giving a estimate until the exact cause of the problem is known.
