Noises problem
1967 Other Ford Models V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic unk miles

First off I want to thank you guys for helping me in the past. After reading some of the problems that may be causing me the grinding sound I decided I was going to do the brakes. They were in fair shape but I found that the wheel bearing on the right side axle had ALOT of play in it. Since my mechanic or I have the tools to press on the bearing we have decided to change the whole rear end mainly because it looked to be the stock one before the engine conversion was done(300 cid 6 cyl to a HP 390 at about 350hp+/-). That brings up yet another issue finding one. Our local pull the part yard has a bunch of Ford 9 inch rear ends in both cars and trucks but can one of you gents guide me to one that is a straight bolt in For my F100 with maybe a bit more beef to hold up to that 390?? Bill

A ford 9" will handle way more power than that 390 could ever decide to put out. As long as the shock mounts and axle mounts measure up to what you are putting it in and it isn't to wide then go ahead. You shouldn't need to do anything inside if it is in good shape. By the way, axle bearings are a common problem with ford's. All you need is a length of pipe to go over the axle and not go over the outside of the inner race on the bearing to install it. A hammer and a rag wrapped around the bearing will take the old one off.
