I have an automatic 1997 ford mustang gt. The car starts fine but will not stay on if I dont step on the gas. This problem only occurs in the morning or after the car has been sitting for many hours. I will usually have to step on the gas until I hear a pop, kind of like a misfire, and then the car will stay on with no problem. What is wrong?

Sounds like your idle air control valve. I had the same problem, where my 2000 GT would not stay on at all without staying on the gas, and I had to drive around using both feet (one on brake and one on gas) so it would not die out. Eventually after a few minutes I would hear that pop sound like something is opening up, then the car would stay on. Not sure if I can advertise this, but I got my part from the RockAuto website, installed it myself (less than 30 mins or so), and problem was solved.
