1996 Ford Fiesta Starter motor / Oil

Hello, when I turn the ignition key it screams and the engine fails to start sometimes, also when I remove the oil cap to top the oil up there is a thick brown slimy gunk around the rim which does'nt look good, hope you can help?

Hi there,

you will need to get the starter inspected for proper operation, this sounds as if the Bendix drive is faulty and not engaging on the rig gear correctly, also with the starter out the ring gear will have to be inspected for tooth damage, if this is the case the transmission will have to be removed and a new ring-rear installed on the fly wheel. For the oil concern, I would just be doing a n engine flush to start with, then keep an eye on things, but I feel that you will have nothing to be concerned with there.
