Ford F-250 Repair Question

I have a 1997 F250. Yesterday, the brakes failed completely. No crash, we were lucky. I discovered a serious leak in the rubber hose leading to the rear axle. Why did the front brakes fail too? I thought there was split system, so you would not lose front and rear brakes at the same time?

The resevoir is divided, but not by much. If the fluid level was already a little low and you pushed the rest out when the hose blew, there isnt anything left for the fronts to use
