I have a '02 F250 power stroke diesel with 114k miles. Recently I started smelling diesel while I was driving. I noticed when I parked diesel was dripping on the ground from under the area of the fuel filter. I looked under the hood and there is a lot of diesel under and around the fuel filter. The cap is on tight and the rubber gasket looks good. I don't know where it is leaking from. The fuel line coming into the filter is on tight and looks good too.

Clean off the fuel and start the engine. While at idle get a flash light and follow the leak up from where it's dripping. Use a mechanics mirror for the hard to see places.

Common problems with fuel leaks on top of the engine are fuel lines and fuel filter housing. The lines are held on with clamps. Often the vibration from the engine will rub holes in the lines. The other posibility is the filter housing. Some common failures are the housing drain o-ring. The lever that drains out the housing can be removed and the o-ring inspected. The other possibility is that the housing cap o-ring is damaged. Also the lines themselves are attached with rubber compression seals. These leak VERY often and sould be the first thing you check.
