I have a 1994 Ford F-150 XLT, 4WD, 165,000 miles. I have been experiencing problems with the truck idling while the A/C is on. The RPM is usually around 1000 at idle. The idle drops to about half of that and then there is a click and the engine races up to about 2000 RPM and starts the cycle again.

That's a little bit high for an idle. But when the a/c is on the engine has to raise the idle rpms because that clicking sound you're hearing is most likely the a/c compressor engaging which causes more strain on the engine so it has to raise to make up for it. I'm not exactly sure why it's going so high though or if it's a big concern.
