1984 F-150, 6 cylndr, rebuilt engine with 8K miles, 120K total miles

Symptoms: Intermittent problem. Started 1 year after rebuild. Starts fine, runs for a while 30 to 60 plus minutes, then engine cuts out especially when idleing. Does not start or even crank until it cools off.

Cools off in one hour, starts fine again but then will continue to cut out from time to time. Only feathering the gas can you keep this running, but it is 10 to 20 seconds of engine stumbling before it catches and smooths out and runs for another 15 mintues.

Since this problem new:
- Battery
- Starter
- Alternator
- Strap and cables

Some have suggested the stator or TFI. I'm willing to try to DIY. I understand the TFI may be easy to replace (I have to see if my 84 has one I can just un Torx screw from the distributor) I don't know about the stator

Thanks,

Glen

The odd part is that it wont crank when it dies. Does the starter relay get trigger from the ign switch? Yes the ignition module can do that, but I would do it and the pick-up coil in the dist. As a set

Thanks for the suggestion.

Is the pick up coil also known as the stator?

A stator is a component of a typical alternator.
The pickup coil is the distributor.

A mechanic that specializes in electrical said he could not find any problems.

I'm going down there to meet with himi and find out what diagnostics he ran.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks very much,

Zennis
