I recently purchased a 2001 F-150. Everything works fine, but I have noticed that the temperature gauge doesn't rise to the normal operating temperature zone(midway?). It always stays in the lower 1/8 zone. Correspondingly, the cab takes quite a while to warm up when I turn the heat on. Is this most likely the thermostat? Or coolant temperature sensor or sender?

that is a very good sign of a bad thermostat, probably stuck open and not allowing the vehicle to warm up properly.

replace it, a cheap and easy thing to do. make sure the mating surfaces are clean and you use a new gasket. youshould bleed the system of air after doing this, put the front wheels up on a ramp so the radiator cap is the highest point of the engine.
