I started my truck in park. I went to put it in gear and the shifter went limp. I goes from R to 3 with no resistance and very little gear selection. It feels like it might want to go into gear but wont. You know how you have a little play in a selected gear usually as wide as the letter, the play is about 3 letters wide if any. I shut the truck off. Now it wont start and the shifter is the same. Is this all related? How do I fix it? I need this truck running.

Hi nsenyk117, Thank you for using 2carpros.com. Let me start by saying that YES I do think these problems are related. If the truck is not in neautral or park it will not start as I'm sure you know. So now we have to find the problem, Lets start by looking at the linkage that connects to the side of the transmission and trace that back to see if you see any defects or breakage or if it came disconnected. Then your next step will be to look under your dash and find the shifter cable and where its mounted. I belive there is a retainer clip that holds it in place, if that clip breaks it could cause your problem. Check all that out and let me know what you find. Well go from there.
