What it is for is to replace a distributor. It keeps track of the cam so that the computer can use the signal coming from it to fire the right cylinder at the right time. Some use just a cam sensor to this some use a crank sensor some use both.

Help! I have a 97' F-150,4.2L V-6.Engine light came on. So I pluged in a code reader, and it gave me two codes,P0340 & P0430. For P0430 I changed the O2 sensor and the code was gone. Now for the last code I changed the Camshaft Position Sensor,But the light wont go away. Now when I changed the Cam. sensor I didn't secronized the shaft.Could that be why the light is still on?

Yes, The shaft itself very well may be bad. The sell new ones at NAPA with the sensor less than $100.

I am getting trouble code P0340 ( Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit Malfunction) and I can't seem to find it for replacement. Does anyone know where I can find it and how hard it is to change out? Or do you have any suggestions of why else this code would be showing up if it isn't the sensor itself? Thanks.

Your going to likley need the shaft that is right underneath it as well. They are available aftermarket that includes the synchronizer shaft and the sensor. Napa carries it.

If it isn't too difficult, I might end up changing out both the shaft and the CPS but I am having a hard time locating it. I would think that it would be located on top of the timing cover but I couldn't find it. Any help?

I also have a 97 F150 4.2L I found the cam position sensor by taking off the air intake hose from the throttle, remove upper radiator hose and two y heater hoses and maybe a few bolts I don't see where the bolts need to come off yet. My question is to prevent antifreeze leakage or waste can I get to it easier from under my truck?

Also just to replace the sensor not the synchronizer you just unscrew it and put on the new one otherwise you need a special tool and technique for the synchronizer

Thanks for the input, to stop the coolant from draining all over use a bucket to drain into once the radiator drain plug is loosened. Did you need more info? we are happy to help.
