I have a 1995 F150 with the 5.8.I have been having a problem with the engine sputter for sometime, but it is getting more frequent lately. The problem only occurs before the engine reaches operating temperature and it doesn't start until the engine has been running for a few minutes. If I have it in park it will run fine for a few minutes after starting it, but then will start to sputter and act like it wants to stall. If I hit the gas it will smooth out.

While driving the problem occurs when I try to accelerate. When I hit the gas it will start to sputter and lose power for a second and then it will surge, and sometime backfire. If I let off the gas it will smooth out, as long as I am still moving. The problem only persists for a few minutes until the engine warms up and then it runs normally.

I used a scan tool and it found codes for the ECT, which I replaced, and "distributerless ignition problem-coil#3 side circuit failure". I am a bit confused about the code since I have a standard distributer. However I replaced the ignition coil, and the problem still persists. Any ideas?

It sounds like the ECT. Engine coolant temp sensor. Located on the thermostat housing.
