F150 ACCIDENTAL BATTERY ARC

1995 Ford F-150

Electrical problem
1995 Ford F150 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 215000 miles

Accidentally shorted wrenches across battery terminals,
now when I turn on lights or turn signals, the engine
dies, unless I turn lights off real quick. In that case the
engine " starts" to stall, but comes back to life when I turn
the lights or turn signals off real quick.

Hello –

Do you have daylight running lamps?

Please give me the 8th digit of your VIN.

Please pull these fuses, one at a time and with the fuse out and truck running turn the light switch on and then the turn signal on and tell me what happens with each.

Fuse R=40amp, C=30amp, F=10amp, and G-10amp

Thank you very much for the donation

Hello " ImpalaSS" I just took the '95 F 150 for test drive, and it was really
bad.
It misses sometimes, bucks a bit if you really hit the gas,
[generally has no power], but gets smoother at 40 mph.

---The parking lights are a bit dimmer on the passenger
side.
---In the dashboard, the right turn indicator light " glows" a tiny bit, when all the truck lights are turned off, but
when it blinks to signal a right turn, it has normal
brightness, [just the same as the left turn indicator].

Hello –

Sorry so long to get back with you……having some computer problems – major ones, so please bear with me as I limp along here.

Okay, so I understand what you said……. First, some of the wiring diagrams are in Alpha characters and some in numeric……. Pretty dump huh………. Makes it more exciting I guess.

When the engine is running and you turn the headlights on the engine dies.

When the engine is running and you turn on the left or right blinker the engine dies.

With engine running………you pulled the main fuses in the engine compartment numbers 3, 6, 7, and 10.
 The engine stayed running the whole time.

With engine running………you pulled the main fuses in the engine compartment numbers 3, 6, 7, and 10.
 You turn the headlights on the engine dies on each fuse.

With engine running………you pulled the main fuses in the engine compartment numbers 3, 6, 7, and 10.
 The turn signals work fine and the engine does not die.

With engine running………you pulled the main fuse in the engine compartment number 19.
 The engine continued to run but no headlights

With engine running………you pulled the main fuse in the engine compartment number 19.
 The engine continued to run and the drivers turn signal worked just fine

With engine running………you pulled the main fuse in the engine compartment number 19.
 The engine died when you selected the passenger side turn signal.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 4 with engine running.
 Engine dies when you turn the headlights on.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 4 with engine running.
 Engine runs and both turn signals work just fine.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 7 with engine running.
 Engine dies when you turn the headlights on.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 7 with engine running.
 Engine runs but you don’t have any turn signals left or right.

Got two more for you – fuse 11 in cab – when you pull it
 Engine does what when you turn the headlights on and what do they do.

Fuse 11 in cab – when you pull it
 Engine does what when you turn the drivers turn signal on and what does it do.

Fuse 11 in cab – when you pull it
 Engine does what when you turn the passengers turn signal on and what does it do.

Now when you were driving it above 40 mph and were turning the lights and turn signals on was it killing the engine?

You obviously have a short in the system……so I really can not guarantee anything here……Once you get back with the above I will search through the wiring diagrams but I can not make a promise on this…………but we will try……………

Hi ImpalaSS
So sorry that you are having BIG computer problems !
> > > Before you last wrote, I unplugged the wiring
harness from the computer, to see if the slightly glowing,
" ever so slightly" glowing right signal indicator would go out. AND NOW IT IS NOT GLOWING ANYMORE.
With the computer wiring harness " plugged in", that
" right side" signal indicator light, in the cab, had a tiny glow
all of the time, [but you could only see it at night, because
it was so dim].
> > Is there anything else that I could check, while the computer is unplugged?

Hello –

Thanks about the computer problems………. Will be able to do more on it or call the repair guy or throw it in the yard once we get some of you folks taken care of……. Thanks for being patient with me.

You probable didn’t have time to do all of those checks I last sent since you were doing other troubleshooting………. Yes?

You may have fried the board………. Check pin 60, black/white tracer to see if it is burnt as far as you can see.

Is there some way to look at the board to see if it has a burn spot and has some solder touching each other or connection points?

There is about oh, 1000 things that go through that so to know what to check – wow….

The best I can tell you for now my friend is do the test I sent……. If it shorted the light switch then that wouldn’t explain the blinkers and vise-versa………. So it may be the PCM………….

There is a wire that comes off the coil wire that goes to the cluster………. Thus my though you hit the lights or blinker that goes to the cluster thus hits the coil………. Just a thought though……….

Also in the engine compartment fuse box you have a PCM relay…. Can you swap it with a like one and see what happens?

Another thing to check is when it kills the engine, with the lights still on, check to see when you turn it over if you have a spark at the plugs………. Then spray some starting fluid in the throttle body and see if it tries to fire off.

My thought pattern here is to see if it is killing the spark to the engine or the fuel……….

Your thought?

Hello Mr. ImpalaSS !

Hope your computer is treating you more kindly today !

Today I put a good computer from a salvage '95 F 150
with same engine & same large transmission, and DRAT,
there was no difference whatever in the symptoms we
have been discussing. I did all of the " below" tests
with this " new" computer installed.

---Should I try a used PCM ?

Today I swapped another relay, in place of the original
relay, for the PCM, [Power Control System]. I did the
" below" tests with this " new" relay in space #1

Today I did these tests that you had asked for with: Fuse 11 in cab - when I pull it
I turn on headlights-they come on -& the engine dies,
but the headlights stay on. --The engine stays running
3 seconds longer at 6000 rpm

Fuse 11 in cab - when I pull it
I turn on drivers turn signal -signal blinks - engine keeps running

Fuse 11 in cab - when I pull it
I turn on passengers turn signal - signal blinks - engine
keeps running.

Fuse 11 in cab - when I pull it--with parking lights on --
I turn on drivers turn signal - signal blinks - engine
keeps running.

Fuse 11 in cab - when I pull it -- with parking lights on-
and with engine at idle
I turn on passenger signal lights - signal lights blink 2
times - engine dies - passenger signals keep blinking,
and every time they blink, the check engine light also
blinks.

Fuse 11 in cab - when I pull it - or leave it installed
- with parking lights on - with engine at 6000 rpm -
when I turn on passenger signal lights - engine keeps
running, BUT ! -Really surges up & down each time that
the signal light blinks
---It's the same when I'm driving 50 or 60 mph - turn
headlights on - engine dies quick
---Driving 50 or 60 mph - with just parking lights on -
it runs O.K. Until I turn on passengers turn signal lights
on - then it sort of bucks with each blink of the signal
lights - and runs REALLY BAD - but the high rpms
keeps the engine from dieing

With fuses in - or out - engine has a slight miss at idle -
- engine tries to cut off if I try to increase rpm of idle -
--Before the " battery arc" - engine had a strong idle

Hello – batteryarc

Well, still having computer problems – thanks for asking……I had to redo the entire drive…. Just about finished…. But figured I would check the posts.

So, let’s discuss this and then I will get back to the computer and Lord willing by late tonight I will be up and running just fine.

Great job by the way on the test results on fuse 11………….I needed the other things either rechecked or verified though……I have attached them again………I just want to make sure I am saying the same thing you are and you have done the checks below……then I will look at that and the wiring diagrams and Lord willing see where it all connects at…….

So please get back with me on the below to make sure I am correct or if you need to do the check, do so and let me know the same as you did with fuse 11.

You turn the headlights on the engine dies on each fuse.

With engine running………you pulled the main fuses in the engine compartment numbers 3, 6, 7, and 10.
The turn signals work fine and the engine does not die.

With engine running………you pulled the main fuse in the engine compartment number 19.
The engine continued to run but no headlights

With engine running………you pulled the main fuse in the engine compartment number 19.
The engine continued to run and the drivers turn signal worked just fine

With engine running………you pulled the main fuse in the engine compartment number 19.
The engine died when you selected the passenger side turn signal.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 4 with engine running.
Engine dies when you turn the headlights on.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 4 with engine running.
Engine runs and both turn signals work just fine.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 7 with engine running.
Engine dies when you turn the headlights on.

When you are in the cab – you pulled fuse 7 with engine running.
Engine runs but you don’t have any turn signals left or right.

Another thing to check is when it kills the engine, with the lights still on, check to see when you turn it over if you have a spark at the plugs………. Then spray some starting fluid in the throttle body and see if it tries to fire off.
