My F150 likes to shift into neutral while I'm driving down the highway. If it were a standard shift, it would be like keeping your foot on the gas while pushing the clutch in.

When it decides to come back into gear (a few seconds later), the jolt is quite annoying!

I've taken it to a local transmission shop twice and they say the transmission is in good shape.

Any ideas? What could be telling the transmission to shift?

Thanks!

Hello,

First off how frequently does it happen?

Here are some possibilities....

Eletronic Shift Control Module Located on the passenger side behind the kick panel.

Shift Solenoid - Located in the tranny pan mounted on the Valve Body, there are 2 or 3 of them. If it is an E4OD Tranny.

Out Put Speed Sensor locate on the drivers rear od tranny. This is only on the 5.0L Engines.

And it could also be the Speed Control Amplifier (AKA Cruise Control). This is easy to check, just disconnect the electrical connection.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It happens nearly every time I drive. It's not always shifting into neutral. Sometimes it will just downshift a gear. Either way, it causes a "wild ride."

It doesn't seem to be related to hot / cold days, hot / cold engine, wet / dry days or anything else I can put my finger on.

The engine is a 5.0l (302 CID) and the transmission is a 4R70W
