Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Ford F150 Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Automatic 185600 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a '94 Ford F150 XLT with dual gas tanks that I bought used. The front tank did not work when I bought the truck two weeks ago, and so I just don't use it as the back one works just fine. The problem is that the front tank has been expelling gas out around the gas cap on the side of the truck. Then if you loosen the gas cap, the gas comes gushing out. The front tank was full when I got the truck, between the gas gushing out, and the gas we were able to syphon out of the front tank, it should have 3/4 of a tank or less, however, every time I drive it, the gas is still coming up and out from the gas cap area. What could this be?

It sounds like a malfuntion in the fuel tank selector valve.
The gas may be bleeding back from one tank to the other causing the front tank to overflow.
Perhaps this is why the front tank does not work in the first place.

Thanks, rowtiear. I do not think gas from the back tank is leaking into the front tank because I am getting very good gas mileage. The gas from the front tank has a very funky smell to it, like maybe somebody put something in it or like maybe the gas is extremely stale.

Also, the front tank says "full" still even though I know at least 4 or 5 gallons has come out of it. I can't afford to take it to the shop as I paid $1690 for the truck, and paid alot to gussy it up lol

I will tell my dad about the selector valve. I do know that selector valves were recalled for this truck, but the Ford company says a previous owner had the procedure done to it already.

they probably installed the check valves wrong.

It is siphoning it from the rear tank to the front tank. it is a common problem with the older ford f150's poor design, take it in and have them fix it.
