I am looking to buy a 94 f150 with a 5.0 manual trans. I looked at the truck and the clutch made a kinda growling noise while I had it down to the floor not to mention the pedal was very soft. the clutch grabbed but about an inch or 2 off the floor.

any ideas first off what that sound could be and what is causing it and why is the clutch pedal soft???

the sound goes away when the clutch is released

I also hear a kinda rattling sound coming from the trans when idling in neutral.. please help!!

I can do the work to fix it but I need to know what I am getting into

Hi there,

The first noise is probably the clutch thrust bearing, the soft clutch may be the pressure plate the gear box noise is probably gear clash and bearing noise, i would be checking the oil for signs of metal.

no no chatter at all just a good solid grab and go. I was wondering if the system had alot of air in it due to a bad master cyl.

Is there pressure on the clutch pedal all the way back up until it stops? As far as the clutch grabbing 2" from the floor, that is actually a good thing. When they are bad or worn out, they don't grab until the clutch pedal is almost the entire way up.

it comes back up if I release it but pushing it down there isn''t a hole lot of tension. then when alll the way down you get that noise

Then, I would start with the master cylender. It sounds like that is the cause of the soft pedal. However, the noise is most likely a throwout bearing or pilot bearing.
