I put my key in the slot and the mechanism want all the way around and would not engage the starter. The radio and accessories lights came on but the starter would not engage. The rest of the electrical system for starting the moter has been replaced so I think the problem is in the key receptical area

The tumbler (where you put the key) is attached to a push rod that goes to the actual ignition switch. Chances are either the tumbler has come disconnected from the rod, or the actual switch has gone bad. However, if the tumbler turns 360 degrees, something has come apart and will require you to remove the steering wheel and part of the steering column to identify the problem.
