Last fall, I got my truck stuck in a ravine while hunting, and while trying to get out, the 4 wheel drive started making a sound like an ice crusher...I figured that wasn't very good, but I was still stuck. The truck would move, but sounded bad, but fortunately, 4 wheel drive still worked in reverse, and I was able to get out of the ravine. I assume the problem is with the transfer case, but I'm not sure what part would have broken to make that noise, and if/how I can fix it myself. The truck still drive fine as long as 4 wheel drive isn't engaged. I have not taken the transfer case apart.

Is the noise coming from the transfer case or the front axle? Does the truck have auto locking hubs or manual?

The noise seems to be comming from the transfer case. And it has manual locking hubs.

I was thinking maybe it was the hubs. If it is coming from the transfer case, then what I suggest is to drain it and see if there are any metal shavings in it or anything out of the ordinary. Chances are it will need removed and taken apart.
