Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 212 KM miles

Hi, I have a 1998 Ford Exlorer ( Vin starting with a 1) and I belevie the fuel pump has stopped working. I can trun it over and it catches and idles fine. But when I put it into drive and apply the gas it startes to hesitate. Like its starving for fuel. I must confess that my check engine ligjt has been going off and on for a while ( 2 months) mostly when I'm going up hill. On Friday while going up a hill ( not towing anything) the engine light stated to flash and then stayed on solid. So my question is. I know this pump is inside the tank, but will I need to have both the sending unit and pump repalced and if so what wiould a fare labour amt for me to pay a tech?

thank you
Rachelle

A good tech can do it in around 2 hours. As far as the pump, I'm not sure that is the problem since the check engine light has been coming on. I would recommend having the computer scanned before replacing the pump. Check local nationally recognized parts stores to see if any will lend or rent a scanner to you and check for engine codes in the computer. If you can't do that, before replacing the pump, check for fuel pressure. Here is a how to video and directions. It is easy to do.

You will need a fuel pressure gauge, but the same thing; most parts stores will lend or rent them to you.

Make sure what the problem is before replacing parts.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.
