I have a 1997 explorer I jjust bought and the all wheel drive and 4 high and low were not working at all, I though it was just something electrical but today the all wheel drive kicked in in the snow and the front wheel started knocking and bilnding up and I put it in 4 high and was doing the same thing, so I turned the vehicle off and back on and the 4 wheel did not work again. Is this a electronic or mechanical problem?

Chances are there is a problem with the VSS, vehicle speed sensor that is causing the 4wd not to work in A4wd. Has the check engine light come on? Has the 4wd light started flashing?

Let me know.

The check engine light is on, but the 4 wheel drive light does not flash it comes on if I put it in 4 high or 4 low like it should, but the 4 wheel does not kick in. And the one time it did kick in the front wheels were binding up.

What I need you to do is take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer. If the light is on, chances are the computer has a trouble code stored in it that will identify where the problem is coming from.
