1995 Ford Explorer V6 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 118,00 miles

My '95 Explorer makes a whiring/grinding noise from the front end that has progressively gotten louder over time. There were metal shavings found in the transfer case at about 85,000 miles. The sound usually increases and decreases in pitch with the speed of the vehicle, however sometimes when driving at high speeds it will completely go away until I come to a full stop. When it returns, however it can act differently at this point. It can pitch up or down but NOT in sink with the speed of the vehicle. I have tried putting the car in neutral and turning the engine off and the sound does not go away. My mechanic thinks it might be a pinion gear. Does this seem accurate? Does this sound like something that needs immediate attention?

Could be, and yes I would see to it very soon. All that waiting does is do further damage to other parts.
