Engine Mechanical problem
1992 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

The starter runes when you turn the key but it does not engage the flyweel. I replaced the starter but it still does the same thing. I have removed the starter and tested it. It works the way it should. I look up in the hole that you mount the starter in and the flyweel teeth look fine.

Just before it started to not work anymore it would make a clunk when it was turning over after it engaged.

Does anybody have any idea as to what I can check t0o fix this problem.

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

Even if the starter looks ok and spins on the bench, it still may be failing under load, i would get the starter tested by an auto electrician as they can do this under operating loads, if the ring gear teeth are ok and the starter is turning with the key, it will be a Bendix issue with the starter.
