Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
1992 Ford Explorer Four Wheel Drive Automatic 130000 miles

I was interested in buying a 1992 Ford Explorer XLT. They are selling it for $500 OBO but it says the 4-wheel drive needs to be fixed. How much does a repair on that usually run?

These repairs require a bit of diagnostics to pinpoint. The most common problem in my experience has been the shift motor on the transfer case. Not a terribly expensive repair, but there are other possibilities.

Electrically, there are fuses, swiches, connector problems, and broken wiring as possibilities.

Mechanically, there are possibilities of broken parts in the transfer case, front differential, axle shafts, and hubs.

As such, it would be impossible to put a price on the repair. Even a guess could be wildly inaccurate.

If you are considering this as a DIY repair job, I can give you some pointers. If you are considering having a shop do the repair work, it could get expensive.
With more information, I could give you a better idea of where to start looking. What type of 4-wheel drive does it have? Manual shifter or pushbuttons? What happens when trying to shift into 4X4? Do lights light? Are there any noises?
