1997 Ford Expedition Transponder Key Issue

Sometimes my vehicle will not start due to the PATS system/ "Theft" light flashing. I have two transponder keys and I have the same problem with both, i.E. Sometimes they work and sometimes the key is not recognized and the PATS will not allow the car to start. Both keys have worked for years. I suspect it's not the keys, but something with the computer not recognizing the keys code. Any insight?

Chances are the is a sensor in the steering column that isn't recognizing the key. I hate to say it, but the only place with the proper test equipment to check it is a dealer. Anything I would recommend would be a guess without properly diagnosing it.
