99 Ford Escort drum brake question

I replaced the rear brake shoes but can't get the
drum to clear the new shoes. I compressed the
cyclinder pistons somewhat and adjusted the quad operating lever as far as it goes. Is there any other
adjustments that I can make so the drum will clear
the shoes when I put it on? Do I need to compress
the cyclinder pistons all the way by opening the bleeder valve? It seems the drum will not clear one
of the sides by just a little bit. If I make an adjustment another side will not clear the drum.
Some how I need to get both shoes to come together so that the drum cover will close.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You may want to check if ther is a lip on the drum at the edge that you could file off to help installation.

The other thing would be to make sure the self adjusters are screwed all the way in. You can lift the flexible adjuster off the star wheel and screw it in to get more clearance-- which is what you need to do anyway when you put new shoes in.
