96 ford escort lx 1.9 140k miles, put a new head on about a year ago app 20k miles ran ok until last week, it stalled at a light and wouldn't start again. I get fuel to the rail about 40 psi, I get spark on all four plugs but compression is low.(75 on 1 & 2, 35 on 3 and 50 on 4) if it was the head gasket woudn't it be normal on 2 or 3 cylinders?

Not necessarily, a warped head for example can give poor reading across the board.

One other thought is the vin 8 motor is an interference motor and if it jumped timing, the valves may be bent.
