2001 Ford Escort rough idle, bogs and stalls when stopping

my car has a very rough idle, boggs down and dies when idle or stopping...

hesitates and slow take off...

problem is erratic... sometimes car runs fine.. other times its rough and slow...

if i rev up the engine very high it sometimes seems to correct the problem...

i would appreciate any tips you can provide...
cheaper easier fixes first...

Inspect and test all the following listed below:

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking,fuel filter or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard.

i disconnected the air valve at the top backside of the engine, started the car with it disconnected and the car started and ran great... it was sucking in air but running very good... then plugged the sensor back on and now the car is running great... dont know what it did to fix it or how long it will last, but for now all is good.... thanks for the help
