2001 Ford Escort 4 cyl Automatic 75,000 miles

My car was fine until this past year. Throughout 2008, my car began shaking much more than normal and became much louder. It has stalled several times, mostly while idling but twice while driving (around 30 mph). When idling, a loud, horrible rattling noise begins coming from under the hood as the vibrations become stronger. The temperature gauge is always on C. Most recently I've had the belt and PCV tube replaced but these helped nothing other than the check engine light.

I had the same problem too. Mine was missing and making noise and I check my wires, injectors, and plugs and all checked fine. Turns out when I took off the valve cover(b bolts up top), the rocker arm on the #2 cylinder on the exhaust side which is the front part of the head was popped out of place. I popped it back into place and tightened it down and it's running fine again.

BTW, I need more info on your engine, is it the reg escort(SOHC) ir the Zx2(DOHC)?
