Engine Performance problem
2000 Ford Escort 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My problem on my 2000 escort started out as a rough idle when the car was cold, and every so often it would just start running rough for a few minutes after iy was warmed up. Now it won't hardly stay running at all. I have checked for spark (good) replaced to coil pack, the fuel filter, and the camshaft position sensor with no luck. I just removed the cat converter thinking that had to be the problem, and it will idle a little pretty good now, but runs terribly rough when given any gas at all. If I pull the fuel line from the filter, and hit the key, it will shoot fuel about a foot in the air, so I'm assuming I have plenty of pressure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the plugs and see their condition if they are wet see if its oil or water. Also check for color. Update us.

I pulled the plugs, they looked to be in real good shape, no oil or discoloration and they "appeared" t ohave good spark when I grounded them out and hit the starter

Are they all the same color? You are looking fo rone or more that are white compared to the others. If this is a 1.9 single cam, you may want to do a compression test to be sure the engine is good.I have seen many of those lose the valve seats in the head and run really rough

Yes, they are all the same color. I FINALLY realized, when I changed the fuel filter, there wasn't any gas spraying from pressure, so I'm in the process of replacing the fuel pump. I'll keep you posted
