1999 Ford Escort CV Joints - Half axles

In the process of removed the transmission from this car. The transaxles will not release from the transmission. These are the OEM transaxles which have never been replaced. I have replaced other transmissions and transaxles and never had this problem. What am I missing. Checked on Fixed Data Base with IATN and did not see wehre anyone had this problem.
