I have a 1998 Escort ZX2 and I want to replace the spark plugs. I can see the distributor cap and the wires going into the crankcase but I do not see where the plugs are on the engine... It is as though they are inside there somewhere.

Is there a cover I need to remove or something to get at the plugs?

So it is the black cover on top of the motor (right next to the oil fill)?

Right, the cylinders stand up. Underneath the cover where the wire go in, you'll find the plugs. The valve cover surrounds and traps the plugs with tubes. Make sure no oil has seaped into the holes before you pull the plugs.
