hi i have a1987 ford ecort 55 van just bled the fuel pipes because of standing for afew weeks started the car and then it a clunk sound the engine stopped turned over but wont start took off the timing belt cover to see if the belt had snapped it hadn't snapped but very loose and the camshaft toothed pulley can be moved in and out about an inch do you have any possible answers please

is the whole camshaft moving or just the pulley on/off the end of shaft ??

the pulley seems tight the bold is not slack when u pull it feels like its moving inside the rocker box and car is 1998 not 87

you are going to have to remove the cover .. and have a look at what has broken.. something has obviously come adrift .. possibly the thrust plate .. if the belt is loose will it come off the pulley and if so can you turn the pulley by hand with no pressure .. is it spinning freely ??

Removal
CAUTION:DO NOT rotate camshafts with timing belt removed, or engine damage may result.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner. Remove valve cover. Remove camshaft oil seal. See CAMSHAFT SEAL . Remove ignition coil, and set aside. Remove ignition coil bracket. Remove rocker arms. Remove camshaft thrust plate. Remove camshaft plug from rear of engine. Remove camshaft toward rear of engine. See CAMSHAFT table for camshaft specifications.

i have taken the cover off and found the problem the camshaft has brocken so in the process of taking the head off to see if has bent any valves. Am i doing the right thing ?
