I have a 98 Escort ZX2 that will only start if you have the pedal to the floor. Once it starts, you cannot let off the accelerator otherwise it will stall. It also seems to be down on power as it does not rev very fast. It is very "boggy" sounding when revving it. When the motor is cranking over, it makes a sputter noise until it starts. Does this sound timing related, or worse?

Do you have a check engine light and when was the last tune-up??

Clean out the idle air control valve, PCV and EGR valves to include the MAF sensor with an electronic cleaner CRC and test the throttle position sensor

Thanks for the quick reply. The Service Engine Soon light is on but I have not had a chance to get any codes.

The spark plugs have been replaced as well as the IAC valve. Haven't done anything with the PCV or EGR valves.
