1997 Ford Escort stalling when at stops

when I stop at a red light or stop sign it was hesitating now its stalling unless I put it in neutral and give it gas .Tonight I pulled up and had to come to a complete stop and it stalled before I even got in neutral to give it gas. pulled up in front of home and left off gas to pull in and it almost stalled til I tapped the gas a little.I put it in park and gave it some gas , left it come back to normal idle and it stalled.Basically I have to use 2 feet to keep it going without stalling. As long as I'm driving its ok
