My mother has a 1997 Ford Escort. She smelled antifreeze and had vapor on her windshield on freezing cold days. I told her it could be her heater core. Her mechanic pressure tested it and said it wasn't leaking it must be something under the hood. He talked her into a thermostat and a water pump. Now the temperature doesn't register above 100 degrees and there is no heat. I told her either the thermostat wasn't working (stuck open) or there is an air-gap. He told her it was probably an air-gap and he needed to get a "special" tool to get the air out. I never heard of such a tool.
