Noises problem
1997 Ford Escort 4 cyl Automatic
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START CAR, ENGINE MAKES A GRINDING NOISE AND TAKES SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE TURNING OVER. ENGINE WILL ONLY RUN FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS BEFORE SHUTTING DOWN, ALSO WITHIN THOSE FEW SECONDS ENGINE RUNS VERY ROUGH.

Lets start by inspecting the conditions of the starter motor drive pinion and the flexplate ring gear.
Dying out in 10secs with rough/erractic idle -check the fuel pressure if its wiithin specs if normal try cleaning out the idle air control valve and EGR/PCV valves and clean the mAF sneor with an electronic cleaner CRC and test the throttle position sensor-
