We just bought a 96 Escort LX S/W and the Oil Light in the dash goes on and off, sometimes. It's never on continuously. The Oil sensor has been changed already. Is this really dangerous? Is the only possible answer that the Oil Pump has to be replaced? Thank you.

Not necessarily. Bad wiring can do that too, especially with this model they put the wiring close to the oil filter. Every time the oil is changed, there is chance that someone moved it. Just to be on the safe side, just make sure that the wiring is good, and you have oil to the level.
