My car won't start, even when given a jump start. There is only a clicking sound from a black box on the firewall. I've had no problems with the starter before today, and I'm at a total loss. Is it the ignition or the starter?

if the starter relay is clicking its not in the ignition. it can however be a bad starter. starter relay or low battery with possible loose or corroded connections.

first step is to jump the starter relays 2 terminalls with a screwdriver. the starter should engage. if it just clicks the solenoid/relay is good and you should instead check the battery charge and cables or the starter.
