My escort wagon engages through the first two gears but when it gets to the third gear shift, its like it completely disengages and the rpm's shoot up high. if the rpm's are dropped low, it will usually engage but it runs very warm afterward. I have checked fluids and they are all good. what would be a good place to start to find out the issue before taking to a transmission shop?

Do you know about how long it would take for a transmission tech to install an automatic transmission. Is it difficult to install one yourself?
