I was driving my 1994 Ford Escort with 205,000 miles home on Thursday and my check engine light came on and I lost power. When I slowed down the car started to shudder, almost dying on me. If I kept on driving for a little while longer, the light would go off and I would regain power. I have replaced the fuel filter thinking that's what it was, but no luck. It did the same thing last night. Any ideas?

Are you able to scan the computer for the fault codes the check engine light indicated are there? That could give you a clue as to what's happening.

Most auto repair shops will have the necessay equipment to scan the computer. Make sure you get a list of every code that pops up.
