My vehicle is overheating and is leaking antifreeze through the tailpipe. I think it may be the head gasket. What can I do to fix my problem?

Hi there,

If you decide to do the head gasket your self, make sure that you have all the gear you need or access to it. Apart from hand tools, you will need a torque wrench, to tighten the head bolts, Now when the head is removed it is not just slip in a new gasket and hay presto all fixed. You will have to have the head crack & pressure tested and if no faults are found have it checked for warpage, and once any repairs have been done, it will have to me machined flat. Now for the block, you will have to remove EVERY trace of old gasket from the block it must be scrupulously clean, also clean all old gaskets from manifolds etc. Re fit head check that you don't have torque to yield head bolts, as these must not be re used. Replace thermostat, flush radiator check all hoses and change oil & filter. Use a good quality coolant and you should not have any problems. Get hold of a work shop manual. Have a read and then decide if your up to doing the job.

Good luck,
