this van won't start , he thinks the solenoid maybe bad

He can check the Starter Relay Selenoid by jumping the large terminals. If the vehicle turns over when jumping terminals replace relay. To find the selenoid just follow the positive battery cable. It should be within 1 foot of the battery.
