Hi I have an 2000 Ford Crown Vic police Interceptor with 147,000 miles, I notice when I accelerate that there is a high pitched whining noise that comes from the engine, but when the car is idle the sound stops.

I see 2 possibilities.

A whistle sound coming from the ductwork of the air intake system.
Or
A bearing in something that spins is failing,
e.G, water pump, alternator, belt pulley.

Does the sound go away after you get up to the speed you want, and let off of the gas pedal?

I'm leaning towards the ductwork of the air intake system.
Look it over for any missing parts, cracks in the plastic tubing, or loose fitting clamps.

I could also just be the nature of the beast.
