96 ford contour automatic 78000 miles v6 24 valve overhead cam, i was driving down the road and noticed a sweet smell so i looked at the gauges and noticed it was overheating, so i pulled over and let it cool down and added coolant. i then drove it but could only go about a mile and the temp gauge would go up and it would start to overheat so i would pull over. i had it towed to the house any help would be greatly apreciated, thank you

I would like to find out if their are any leaks or coolant in the oil.

if there is leaks then suspect a cracked or leaking improperly tightend coolant hose. just replace it.

if you have foamy oil or oil in coolant or oil then suspect a bad head gasket.

if there is none of that then suspect a bad thermostat or a air bubble in cooling system.
